Orpheus Descending
Yale School of Drama
Written by Tennessee Williams
Directed by Benjamin Mosse
Sets by Lee Savage
Lighting by Miriam Nilofa Crowe

The silhouette and construction of the clothes for this production were inspired primarily by Sears catalogs and documentary American photography of the late 1940s and early 50s. In tribute to the Orpheus myth embedded in the play, I drew the subdued palette straight from William Blake's dark paintings of hell. I chose only clothes and fabrics without any printed pattern, giving the costumes a subtle sense of uniformity and oppression.
